Overview

This year, 69% of respondents were male, 28% female and 3% preferred not to say. The majority of participants were from Germany and the UK and were aged between 25 and 34 (59%). The greatest response was from Data Scientists (36%).

Engineers expect to code for longer

When asked, ‘how many hours a week do you spend coding?’ we found that those with engineering roles typically code for longer periods of time than their co-workers. For instance, 70% of Machine Learning Engineers stated they code between 21-30 hours a week. 25% of Research Engineers code for 31+ hours.

In contrast, higher seniority roles often correlate to fewer hours coded. Head of/Director/Chief Data Scientists were the most likely to code 0 hours a week. 20% of Senior Data Scientists code between 1-5 hours a week.

Salaries are on the rise (but only by a small margin)

For the first time ever, all of our respondents reported some form of salary increase in the last two years. 35% declared a 0-5% increase, whilst 18% saw a 6-10% increase. Whilst this is marginal to the inflation of living costs, this is a step in the right direction.

Of those that have been in their current role for less than two years, 39% expect a 6-10% increase.

Employees are actively looking for work, regardless of tenure

Despite 64% of respondents saying they are satisfied with their salary, 50% of them are currently looking for work. This goes to show that salary is not always the driving force for employees to begin their job search.

Of those who have been at their current place of work for 2 years, 51% are open to a new role. A further 23% are open to work in their first year!
